Pelzek to Captain 2005-06 Navy Women's Basketball Team

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Rising senior Ashley Pelzek (East Longmeadow, Mass.) has been selected by her teammates to serve as the captain of the 2005-06 Navy women's basketball team.

"I am very excited to be elected captain of the team," said Pelzek. "It is a position of great leadership and knowing my teammates have given me this honor means more to me than I could ever express.

"We have a great senior class and both of my classmates -- Lauren Skrel (Walnut Creek, Calif.) and Meredith Addington (Washington, Pa.) -- share all of the qualities a team looks for in a captain. Knowing their abilities I see this team as being led by not just one senior, but the three of us as the senior class."

Navy head coach Tom Marryott concurred with the selection of Pelzek as team captain.

"Ashley will do an outstanding job as team captain," said Marryott. "I have the utmost confidence in her leadership abilities and, more importantly, in her dedication to the team and the Navy women's basketball program. The selection of Ashley by her teammates shows the respect and admiration they have for her. The entire coaching staff shares the same sentiments."

Pelzek enjoyed a breakout year on the court during the 2004-05 campaign. After not making a start and totaling less than 100 points and 40 rebounds during her freshman and sophomore years, Pelzek started all but one game last year as a junior and tallied over 200 points (7.1 ppg) and just under 100 rebounds (3.1 rpg) on the season. She connected on 45 three-point field goals on the season, the second-highest total on the team and the most of any returning Mid.

Pelzek also achieved great success in the classroom last year, as well. The international relations major attained a 3.8 grade-point average during the spring semester, a new personal best and her third-straight semester with at least a 3.0 GPA.
