Annapolis, Md. - Navy offshore sailing took fourth place at the Lloyd Phoenix Trophy this weekend as the Naval Academy hosted the 2003 U.S. Offshore Championship. Eleven teams competed this weekend, with senior Kris von Krueger (Baton Rouge, La./Admiral Farragut) skippering the Navy entry. Each visiting team also took a midshipman on board as part of their crew.
The U.S. Offshore Championship is a fleet racing competition in offshore keelboats on closed courses plus one long-distance race. The winner of the received the Lloyd Phoenix Trophy, named after an 1861 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He served in the Civil War and witnessed the battle between the USS Monitor and the USS Virginia in 1865.
The boat skippered by Hank Stuart (with freshman Evan Scott on crew) won the title, with two-top finishes and a second and third place finish in the five-race series.
