ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- After opening play at the Trident Classic with a three-game sweep of Delaware State, the Navy volleyball team lost a five-game match to Niagara Friday night in Macdonough Hall.
Niagara (4-1) won the first game from the Mids, 30-25, but Navy (4-2) won games two and three by scores of 30-16 and 30-28, respectively. The Purple Eagles would win game four by a score of 30-25 before posting a 15-11 victory in game five to win the match.
"It was a very close, very hard-fought match," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob of the nightcap against Niagara. "There were a lot of momentum swings and Niagara caught one late and that pushed them through to the victory. Being able to do that is a sign of a veteran team.
"We did have our opportunities in games four and five, but didn't take advantage of them and finish the job. We had a lot of bright spots, but the match also was a learning experience for us tonight."
Navy's Jessie Sims (Fr., Etowah, N.C.) recorded her second double-double of the young season with a career-high 21 kills and 16 digs, while also hitting .364 in the match. While Sims led Navy in kills, team captain Andrea Wernecke (Gaithersburg, Md.) led the squad with 18 digs.
In Navy's first match of the tournament, Ashley Musser (Sr., Industry, Pa.) tallied 12 kills, 16 assists and a .429 hitting percentage to lead the Mids to a 30-23, 30-22, 30-19 victory over Delaware State (1-3).
Delaware State will face Niagara Saturday at 10 a.m., with Navy and High Point closing out the tournament at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played in Macdonough Hall.
