ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy fought back from deficits throughout the match, but in the end American was too much for the Navy volleyball team and posted a 30-22, 29-31, 30-23, 30-25 victory over the Midshipmen Tuesday night in Macdonough Hall.
"What was most pleasing to me tonight was the effort we displayed throughout the match," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "We were in every point and every game and put ourselves in a position to win the match. We never had deep deficits to climb out of and were able to climb out of those we did.
"We still have work to do and errors to clean up, but if we can display the effort, passion and pride we did tonight during the rest of our matches then good things will happen for this team. We have an important weekend coming up against two very good teams and we will need to be as ready for them as we were tonight. "
American took slim leads of up to five points in each of the four games, but each game was tied around the 20-point mark. In game two, the Eagles took a 29-27 lead before Navy rallied and ended the game by scoring four-straight points and posting a 31-29 victory.
Navy outhit American on the night, .319-.315, thanks to nice play from Navy's two setters, Ashley Musser (Sr., Industry, Pa.) and Kim Koss (Jr., Clarence Center, N.Y.). Musser ended up with 27 assists and 13 kills, while Koss tallied 27 assists, as well. Rachel Dougherty (So., Derwood, Md.) led Navy with 14 kills on the night.
Cutrina Biddulph led American with 16 kills and a .467 attack percentage.
Navy will return to Macdonough Hall for a pair of matches this weekend, taking on Lafayette Friday at 7 p.m. and Lehigh Saturday at 4 p.m.
