WASHINGTON, D.C. - Despite getting off a season-high tying 12 shots on goal, the Mids were unable to convert their opportunities into goals and American (4-7-0/1-0-0 PL) defeated the Navy women's soccer team (7-3-2/0-1-0 PL) 2-0 Friday afternoon at Reeves Field in both teams' Patriot League opener. Navy is now 5-6-1 in Patriot League openers and for the second-straight season, the Mids open their conference slate with a loss.
American took an early lead when in the sixth minute senior Lena Winkler served the ball from the left side of the box to newcomer Lindsay Miller. The freshman midfielder had only Navy keeper Haley Crain (Friendswood, Texas) to beat and Miller buried the shot in the right corner of the net for her first-collegiate score.
The Eagles tacked on a goal to their lead in the 79th minute when AU was awarded a penalty kick after freshman Elise McCaskey (Butler, Pa.) was called for a hand ball in the box. Junior defender Jana Lee scored her third goal of the season as she drilled in the Eagles' first penalty kick of the 2005 campaign.
Once the Mids' defense settled down, it held American to just one solid goal-scoring opportunity in the final 60 minutes - the corner kick which ultimately led to the PK.
Navy had countless missed scoring opportunities, including a shot by junior midfielder Molly Burd (Englewood, Colo.) from four yards out in which she booted over the net early in the second half. Navy's leading scorer Meggie Curran (Silver Spring, Md.) took seven shots, four of which where on goal and two were on breakaways, while sophomore forward Kari Weniger (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was stuffed twice by AU keeper Alison Doyle.
Navy returns to action next Friday when it plays host to arch rival Army in the annual Star Game. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
