ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Three Navy wrestlers have earned spots in the preseason Amateur Wrestling News national rankings released today. Seniors Tanner Garrett and Craig Dziewiatkowski and junior John Cox have all been ranked among the top-20 at their respective weight classes. All three of them advanced to the last year's NCAA Tournament.
Garrett, who hails from Tulsa, Okla., leads the way with a No. 7 ranking at heavyweight. Garrett had one of the finest seasons in school history last year, posting a 35-5 overall record, including a 14-0 dual-meet record. He placed second to All-American Matt Feast of Pennsylvania for the second straight year at the EIWA Conference meet and went 3-2 at the NCAA Tournament, ending his season two wins shy of All-America status. He enters 2005-06 with a 71-28 career record and his 35 wins last year are tied for the seventh most in school history. He was ranked as high as ninth in the country a year ago.
Dziewiatkowski, a native of Aurora, Ill., is ranked 17th at 165 pounds. He posted a 29-14 record last year and reached his first NCAA Tournament. He finished third at the EIWA Tournament behind a pair of All-Americans, and his 43 matches last year are tied for the 10th most in school history. He enters the season with a 53-30 career record and has 13 career falls to his credit.
Cox, who is from Grand Haven, Mich., is ranked 13th at 149 pounds. He also advanced to his first NCAA Tournament, posting a 29-11 mark in 2004-05. His career record stands at 49-17, and his 49 wins are the fourth most in school history during the first two years. His 29 wins from a year ago are the fourth most ever by a Navy sophomore. He placed fourth in last year's EIWA Tournament, behind two All-Americans, and for his career, he has an 18-6 dual-meet record.
Navy is coming off a 12-3 record last season and a top 25 national ranking. The Mids will open the season on Oct. 29, with the Blue-Gold Challenge Matches, before heading to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the Eastern Michigan Open on Nov. 6.
