TROY, Ala. - Laura Lee Holman lofted in a running 10-foot shot at the buzzer to give Troy an 89-87 double overtime victory over the Navy women's basketball team, Wednesday night in Troy, Ala. The loss gives Navy a 7-6 record on the year, while Troy improved to 6-5.
"We take away so many positives from this game," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "We showed so much heart in rallying from a large deficit on the road. We played hard right from the start of the game and fought through a lot of foul trouble. Everyone we put in the game had a hand in our comeback.
"It's a tough way to lose, but we can feel good about so many things."
Holman scored 16 first-half points and the Trojans shot 52 percent from the field in taking a 41-31 lead at intermission. That lead quickly grew to 14 points at 45-31 early in the second half. The lead would remain at 13 points with 13:10 left to play in regulation when Navy started its comeback.
The Mids would connect on a pair of free throws and three of their next four field goals to pull to within three points at 53-50. Lauren Skrel (Sr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) started the run with a three-pointer followed by a pair of free throws, then a jumper by Betsy Burnett (Jr., New Holstein, Wis.) and a three-pointer from Margaret Knap (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) closed the run.
The Trojans would increase their lead back to eight points at 60-52, but Navy answered with a 9-1 run to tie the game at 61-61. Skrel again started the run with a triple, with Burnett following with a steal and layup. Knap then hit a pair of field goals to tie the game with 4:46 left to play.
Troy would take a two-point lead four times over the three minutes but Navy answered each time. After a Troy turnover with the score tied and 1:08 left to play, missed a pair of shots but grabbed the offensive rebound each time. Finally, Ashley Pelzek (Sr., East Longmeadow, Mass.) connected on a baseline jumper to give Navy a 71-69 lead with 40 seconds left to play.
After a Troy timeout, the Trojans tied the score with 20 seconds left to play on a field goal from Kylie Morrissy. Navy held for one shot and eventually Skrel missed a runner in the lane at the buzzer.
Navy quickly scored the first five points of overtime to take a 76-71 lead with 2:49 left to play, but Troy closed to within one point following a pair of free throws by Alecia Jones with 16 seconds showing on the clock.
The Trojans fouled Pelzek on the inbounds pass and the senior team captain drilled both free throws to give the Mids a three-point lead with 15 seconds left in the period. After Pelzek blocked a shot from Amy Lewis with nine seconds on the clock, the Trojans inbounded to Holman who drilled a three-pointer with six seconds left. Navy quickly inbounded to Skrel who weaved her way downcourt only to miss an off-balance shot in the lane with two seconds to play. Burnett was there for the rebound only to see her putback attempt roll off the rim at the buzzer.
Navy again quickly took an early lead at the start of the second overtime as Knap drilled a three-pointer on Navy's first possession. After Troy pulled to within one point, the Mids suffered a big blow when Skrel drove the lane and was whistled for a questionable offensive foul, her fifth of the game.

The Trojans again missed their next shot from the field but Alecia Jones grabbed the loose ball rebound in the lane and scored on a putback with 38 seconds left. Pelzek would miss a shot with 10 seconds to play and Knap was quickly called for a foul with nine seconds to play. The foul made her the fourth Navy player to foul out of the game.
Jones missed the first free throw attempt but made the second to give Troy an 87-84 lead. Navy rushed the ball down the court and Pelzek drilled a 30-foor shot with four seconds left to play to tie the game. Holman then took the inbounds pass and went three-quarters of the court to score on a twisting leaner around a defender at the buzzer to end the game.
