PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Navy junior Kirsten Andrews (New Holland, Pa.) qualified for the ECAC Championship in winning the pole vault and placed third in the 60-meter hurdles as Navy won five events at the non-team scoring UMES Invitational on Saturday at the William P. Hytche Center.
Andrews, the 2005 Patriot League indoor champion in the pole vault, cleared 11'9-3/4" (3.60 meters) to advance to the ECAC Championship in March. The junior also crossed the finish line in 8.94 seconds during the 60-meter hurdles event to finish third.
Sophomore Vicki Moore (Burke, Va.) had a hand in two of Navy's first-place performances on Saturday. Moore won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.52, while running the second-leg of the fastest distance medley relay unit. Moore, Junior Erin Demchko (Nanuet, N.Y.), sophomore Jessica Orr (New Holland, Pa.) and sophomore Stefanie Peskosky (Charlotte, N.C.) teamed up to post a time of 12:48.36.
The Midshipmen owned the top-three mark in the 20-lb. weight throw. Senior Cayanne McFarlane (Fairbanks, Alaska) uncorked a throw of 45'4-1/2" (13.83 meters) in claiming first-place. Freshman Meg Joyce (West Kingston, R.I.) finished second with a throw of 44'3-1/2" (13.50 meters), while senior Mary Nell (Dillsburg, Pa.) came in third via a 38'8-1/4" (11.79 meters) mark.
Senior Michelle Schiller (Glendale, Ariz.) led all competitors in the triple jump to round out Navy's five first-place showings on Saturday. Sophomore Kyleigh Millhouse (Boiling Springs, Pa.) also provided a strong showing for the Midshipmen, as she placed second in the 3,000-meter run.
"We looked good in some events today," stated head coach Carla Criste. "I think we are where we are expected to be at this time of the year. I am hopeful that we will continue to ramp up our performances in the upcoming meets."
Navy returns home to host Robert Morris and UNC-Wilmington next Saturday (Jan. 14) at Halsey Field House. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
