NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A very successful showing at the Hampton Roads Invitational of Newport News came to a disappointing end for the Navy tennis team Sunday as the Mids were forced to default a trio of finals matches due to injuries.
"It was a long tournament and we were just banged up today," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We totaled 26 wins over the three days, however, which is a very respectable record."
In singles, Jason Hill (So., Atlanta, Ga.) was forced to end his `B' flight final match against Chris Meyer of UMBC early in the second set due to an arm injury, while Stanley Kahl (Sr., Richland, Pa.) never even took to the court to begin his `C' flight final against Nate Grover of Old Dominion because of an injured ankle. In addition, Kahl's injury forced himself and teammate Adrian Lai (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) to withdraw from their `C' flight doubles final match against Eddie Glidewell and John Mook of Christopher Newport.
The `D' flight singles final was an all-Navy pairing as Alex James (Jr., Visalia, Calif.) recorded a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Jarrad Smoke (Fr., Belmar, N.J.).
Select Navy players will next be in action this weekend at the ITA Regional Championship in Philadelphia.
