WEST POINT, N.Y. -- John Kubelka's second goal of the season came with just 3:32 to play in the second overtime, giving Army a 4-3 decision over Navy on a chilly Friday night in front of 847 fans in West Point. The loss drops Navy's record to 4-8-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the Patriot League, ending Navy's hopes of advancing to the postseason league tournament. Army improves to 6-8-1 overall and 2-4-0 in league play.
The game was a see-saw affair in the second half, as Army drew first blood just 2:16 after halftime. John Borland scored the first of two goals on the night with a direct kick following a Navy foul.
However, Navy evened the score at one when senior Addy Strasdas tallied his second goal in as many games just 18 seconds later.
Navy took a 2-1 lead just five minutes later when McKenzie Plank netted his seventh goal of the season, but this time, Army tied the game just over a minute later when Chase Hunter knotted the score at two.
The Black Knights would take a 3-2 lead on Borland's second goal of the game in the 79th minute, but senior Brad Feige tied the game at three just over a minute later, sending the game into overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime, Kubelka ended the contest in the 107th minute. Chris Conklin settled a long Army pass, dished the ball to Kubelka, who blasted a shot from 14 yards out for the victory.
Navy was looking to extend its overall Star Game series lead in 2006-07, but with Army's win, the Mids still lead the series, 4-2.
It also marked the first time Navy has lost when scoring three goals in a game since the 1998 contest with Army, also a 4-3 setback on Oct. 23, 1998.
Navy was forced to play with its fourth keeper this year, as Evan Barnes missed the game with a concussion suffered against Lafayette. Sophomore Nolan Grebb was seeing his first career action in goal, registering five saves and allowing four goals. Navy was outshot, 13-9, outcornered, 10-7, and was whistled for 19 fouls to just eight for Army.
Navy still leads the all-time series against Army, 35-25-13. Five of the last eight meetings between the two teams have gone to overtime.
The Mids will now try to play the role of spoiler in their final two games this week. Navy will travel to American for a 2:00 p.m., kickoff on Tuesday, and then closes out the season next Saturday with a 4:00 p.m., game at Bucknell.
