Navy Water Polo Advances to Southern Title Game

Oct. 28, 2006

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The 12th-ranked Navy water polo team cruised past a pair of opponents to advance to the CWPA Southern Division title game on Sunday, with victories over George Washington, 10-5, and Bucknell, 12-9. The wins move Navy into the title game against Princeton on Sunday at 12:45 pm.

In the first game, a 10-5 win over George Washington, Navy jumped out to a 4-0 cushion at the end of the first quarter, a 6-1 advantage at halftime and a 9-1 lead after three quarters to cruise to the victory.

"Defensively, we did a very good job in the first game," said Navy head coach Mike Schofield, whose team won its 19th game for the 25th straight year. "We had some fundamental errors on offense, but we got the job done and moved on."

Aaron Recko continued his standout season with three goals, while Tyler Hill scored twice. Five players netted one goal each. George Naughton made four saves in goal, while Steve Craney stopped one shot in a reserve role.

In the second game of the day, Navy led 6-4 at halftime, increased its lead to 10-6 after three quarters and cruised home for a 12-9 victory. Bram Arnold scored three times, Recko, Mike Mulvey and Todd Carlson scored twice and three others netted one goal. Naughton made seven saves in goal.

Navy, now owners of a 20-5 record, will battle rival Princeton at 12:45 on Sunday, for the right to be called Southern Division champions. The winner will earn the No. 2 seed for the CWPA Eastern Division championship in two weeks.
