FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- The Alaska-Fairbanks rifle team pulled away from a tight match in the air rifle discipline and defeated the Navy rifle team, 4,651 - 4.583, on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops Navy's record to 1-1 overall.
"Our smallbore score wasn't too bad, but I was pretty disappointed with our air rifle score," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "Against the University of the Sciences, we had five people over 580 in air, and today we had only one. We were close, just not colse enough. We are looking forward to our match tomorrow with Nebraska and hope we can perform better."
The Nanooks outscored Navy, 2,301 to 2,274 in smallbore. Sarah Bergman fired a 583, Chris Schneider added a 578, Lisa Kunzelman recorded a 577 and Ryan Miller scored a 571.
Alaska-Fairbanks then outscored Navy 2,350 to 2,309 in air rifle for the victory. Schneider was the overall medalist in air rifle with a 584, Alex Karacsonyi scored a 567, Sarah Bergman shot a 565 and Monica Amagna contributed a 558.
Navy will battle Nebraska on Sunday at 2:00 EST.
