Navy Battles Colgate to Scoreless Tie

Oct. 7, 2006

Box Score

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's soccer team outshot Colgate, 15-13, but couldn't solve the stingy Colgate defense and recorded its second tie of the season in a 0-0 tie with the Raiders at a chilly Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Saturday night. The tie improves Navy's record to 4-5-2 overall and 0-2-1 in league play. Colgate improves to 6-1-4 overall and 2-0-2 in the Patriot League.

With the tie, Navy receives its first point in league play, but head coach Rich Miranda wanted more.

"It was basically a must-win situation for us," said Miranda. "We have to give credit to Colgate. They are a very defensive-minded team, and really limited our chances. As has been the story all season, we just couldn't take advantage of the few chances we got. It was a very frustrating game for us."

The two team's chances were limited in the first half as Navy outshot the Raiders, 7-4, but none of Navy's chances were on goal. Navy had a golden chance midway through the second half, when Colgate fouled just outside the box. However, a McKenzie Plank rocket off a direct kick was deflected away and Colgate thwarted the chance. Colgate also had a pair of chances in the second half and overtime, but two shots richocheted off the posts, keeping the Raiders off the board.

"I thought we were very flat in the first half, but played well in the second half and overtimes," said Miranda. "But we just didn't create enough chances in the offensive third. The midfield and back four played well for us, so that is encouraging."

Miranda moved Anthony Parker and Justin Waskey to the outside back, and moved Tom Shelly into a midfield position. The head coach was pleased with the effort of the trio.

"Hopefully, those guys have found their positions for the rest of the season," said Miranda. "All three of them played well in new spots."

Despite outshooting the Raiders, 15-13, the Mids had just one shot on goal. Evan Barnes recorded his second career shutout with three saves. Navy was whistled for 25 fouls to Colgate's 14.

The Mids will travel to Howard on Tuesday night for a 7:00 p.m., kickoff.
