SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Kate Hobbs (Sr., Wexford, Pa.) and Whitney Davidson (So., New Oxford, Pa.) combined to score 31 of Navy's 46 second-half points during a 77-67 victory by the Mids over Howard, Saturday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium in South Orange, N.J. The victory by Navy in the consolation game of the Seton Hall Basketball Classic was the first of the year for the Mids (1-3), while the Lady Bison fell to 0-5 on the year.
"Today's victory really started in the second half of Friday's loss to Massachusetts," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "We came out to start that half with a lot of intensity and emotion. Our goal coming into today's game was to display that throughout an entire game. Doing that was the difference in the outcome."
Navy's defense held Howard without a field goal for nearly eight minutes in the first half, but the Lady Bison stayed in the game by sinking 13-of-15 free throws during the opening 20 minutes of play. The Mids shot 44.0 percent from the field in the first half to take a 31-25 lead at intermission.
Hobbs began the second half by scoring Navy's first six points to help the Mids open a 37-27 lead then during a five minute stretch, tallied 10 of Navy's 12 points as the Mids took a 53-38 advantage.
Howard would make a run at the Mids, slicing the margin down to seven points at 62-55, but the Mids converted down the stretch at the free throw line to seal the victory.
Hobbs converted 8-of-13 shots from the field and all 11 of her free throw attempts to record her second-straight double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds. She tallied 21 of her 27 points during the second half.
Davidson, who was making just the second start of her career after scoring a total of 6 points during her entire freshman season, finished with 18 points on the day on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and making all four of her free throw attempts.
Navy will return to Alumni Hall Nov. 25 to play Mount St. Mary's at 2 p.m.
