ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy freshman Chris Harris earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors for his role in two Navy wins last weekend, the league office announced Monday. It is the first weekly honor of the season for any Navy player. Harris is the sixth Midshipman currently on the roster to win Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors. Navy is currently off to a 3-1 start, its best start since the 1998-99 season.
Harris, a 6-2, 170-pound guard from Mechanicsville, Va., averaged 15.0 ppg, 3.5 apg, 3.0 rpg and 1.0 spg in Navy's wins over Brown (70-47) and Stony Brook (87-76). In the Brown victory, Harris played 19 minutes off the bench, connecting on 3-of-5 three-pointers for nine points, grabbed two rebounds and a steal and dished out three assists. He then exploded for 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-8 from three-point range, dished out four assists and grabbed four rebounds and a steal in 27 minutes off the bench, in the win over Stony Brook. For the year, Harris is averaging 8.8 ppg, 1.8 rpg and 2.0 apg, while shooting .706 (12-of-17) from the field and .643 (9-of-14) from three-point range. He played just one minute in the opener against Loyola, but has responded by averaging 11.7 ppg in his last three games.
He currently ranks second in the Patriot League in field goal percentage (.706) and is first in three-point percentage (.643). He also owns a 4.00 assist-to-turnover ratio, but does not average the minimum 3.0 apg to qualify in the league rankings.
Harris and his teammates open their home season on Tuesday night with a 7:00 p.m., tilt against Maryland-Eastern Shore at Alumni Hall. For ticket information, call 1-800-US4-NAVY.
