BALTIMORE, Md. - Despite holding UMBC to a .118 attack percentage in the match, the Navy volleyball team dropped a 30-22, 30-20, 30-26 decision to the Retrievers, Tuesday night in Baltimore.
"It was a sloppy match on both sides of the net," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "Each of the three games were close, but UMBC was able to come up with the one small run they needed during each game to give themselves some breathing room."
Game one was tied at 7-7 when UMBC (13-14) scored eight of the next 11 points to take a 15-10 lead. The Mids (11-18) were able to pull to within three points several times, including at 20-17, but were unable to narrow the margin any more.
The second game was very similar to the first as it was tied at 11-11 before a 6-0 run for UMBC gave the Retrievers a 17-11 advantage.
Both teams hit .000 in the second game, but the Mids tallied just seven kills to 12 for the Retrievers.
Navy's best offensive game came in what would prove to be the final frame of the night. The Mids hit .200 in the game and held the Retrievers to a .163 percentage, but it still was not enough for Navy to pull out the win.
Similar to the opening two games of the match, UMBC went on a small 4-0 to take a 14-10 lead over Navy. The Mids climbed back into the game, however, pulling to within 27-26 on a kill from Jessie Sims (So., Etowah, N.C.). Navy gave the serve right back to UMBC, however, when Megan Boyd (Sr., Richmond, Va.) committed a service error. The match ended when Sims was blocked for a point and Krista Eschelman (Fr., Germantown, Md.) committed an attack error.
While the Navy defense held the Retrievers to the low hitting percentage, its offense failed to find its rhythm and the Mids totaled just a .084 percentage in the night.
UMBC totaled just two more digs and 1.5 more blocks than Navy did, but serving played a big role in the match. The Retrievers recorded seven service aces and six service errors in the contest, while Navy tallied just one service ace to 13 service errors.
Sims led Navy with 13 kills and 19 digs, while Jessie Folk and Sarah Fillmore both tallied seven kills to pace the UMBC offense.
Navy will close its 2006 season this weekend with matches Friday against Colgate and Saturday against Bucknell. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m. in Macdonough Hall.
