ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Georgetown opened the second half on an 18-2 run to pull away from the Navy women's basketball team and eventually post a 51-34 victory over the Mids, Monday night in Alumni Hall.
"Tonight was an indication of how our season has gone," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "We've played pretty strong, smart defense, as we did tonight, but we're not shooting the ball well. We have good shooters on the perimeter, but they are not getting the shots and when they do get them, they aren't falling."
Navy (2-6) held a 17-16 advantage at intermission, but the Mids began the second half 0-of-5 from the field while Georgetown (7-2) hit three of its first six shots and added a pair of free throws to quickly jump out to a 24-17 lead. After Kate Hobbs (Sr., Wexford, Pa.) hit a jumper to pull the Mids to within five points, the Hoyas scored the next 10 points to take a 34-19 lead with 12:50 left in the game.
The Mids would slice the margin down to nine points at both 36-27 and 38-29, but could climb no closer.
Navy shot just 20.4 percent from the field in the game as a team. Hobbs alone was 6-of-12 from the field and connected on 5-of-6 free throw attempts to tally 17 of Navy's 34 points on the night. Carly Meyer (Sr., Orlando, Fla.), who earlier in the day was tabbed as the Patriot League Player of the Week and averaged 28 points a game over the last three games, was 3-of-20 from the field and 0-of-10 from behind the three-point line.
"I've been happy with the consistency of Kate inside," said Marryott. "We need other players to hit some outside shots for us so defenses do not clog it up on her inside. Tonight was just an off night shooting for Carly."
Meyer did tally a trio of blocked shots to help the Navy defense hold the Hoyas to 34.5 percent shooting from the field and their lowest point total of the season.
Neither team shot the ball well from the foul line, with Navy sinking 12-of-19 free throw attempts (63.2%) and Georgetown connecting on just 9-of-19 shots (47.4%) from the charity stripe. Both teams also turned the ball over 22 times in the game.
Navy's previous program low for points scored in a game was 38, which was set on three prior occasions.
Navy will next play Wednesday night when the Mids play at UMBC in a 7 p.m. game. The contest can be heard live on WNAV-AM 1430 starting at 6:45 p.m.
