HAMILTON, N.Y.-Carly Meyer scored a career-high tying 25 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds as Navy (13-12, 6-6 in the Patriot League) defeated Colgate (7-18, 5-7), 80-62, Saturday afternoon in front of 482 fans at Cotterell Court in Hamilton. It was Navy's first win at Colgate since 1998 and was Navy's sixth road win of the year, the most by a Navy team since the 1997-98 squad won seven. That team made it all the way to the Patriot League title game before falling at Holy Cross, 67-60.
"We did a real nice job defensively, especially early in the game," said Marryott. "We limited them to one shot on most possessions. Offensively, we were real crisp right from the start. We moved the ball really well. Everyone was looking for an open player. We didn't force shots."
The Mids, playing without starter Margaret Knap who missed the game because of a family obligation, put the game away early by scoring the first nine points of the contest. Colgate didn't make a field goal until the 13:42 mark of the first half and by that time the Mids held an 18-3 advantage.
Despite the big lead, Navy was able to keep its focus and continued to play its best half of basketball of the year, increasing the lead to 38-11 on two Betsy Burnett free throws with 3:33 left in the half. The Mids led 42-24 at the intermission, thanks to Meyer's 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Navy was able to maintain that 18-point halftime advantage in the second half, as the Raiders could get no closer than 14 points.
Burnett added 17 points and six rebounds for the Mids, while Kate Hobbs scored 15 points and grabbed eight boards. Lauren Skrel scored 12 points and handed out eight assists.
Navy, in sole possession of fourth place, will travel to American on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. contest before returning home to play host to Colgate in the season finale at 12 noon.
