POINT LOMA, Calif. - Navy women's track and field junior Danielle Still (Lawnside, N.J.) smashed the school record in the javelin and won the shot put as the Midshipmen registered 10 event victories at the non-team scoring Point Loma Invitational on Saturday.
Still uncorked an ECAC qualifying throw of 152'11" (46.60 meters) in the javelin to break the Academy record of 149'4" (45.52 meters) held by Susan Smith during the 1999 season. The effort on Saturday was also more than six feet longer than her previous career-best throw at last year's Patriot League Championship. The junior also out-distanced the field in the shot put with a toss of 36'6-3/4" (11.75 meters).
Sophomore Jacquelyn Charnigo (Medina, Ohio) joined Still as an ECAC Championship qualifier in the team's first outdoor meet of the year. Charnigo cleared a career-best 12' (3.65 meters) to pull down first-place honors on Saturday.
Junior Priscilla Lewis (St. Andrews, Jamaica) accounted for two of Navy's first-place times. Lewis won the 100-meter dash with a clocking of 12.20 seconds, then crossed the finish line first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.77 seconds. Each of her two first-place times came in events that she had not competed in during her first-two years donning the Navy blue and gold.
Junior Kirsten Andrews (New Holland, Pa.) won the 100-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 14.40 seconds. Classmate Rochelle Gandy (Sacramento, Calif.) soared 16'8" (5.08 meters) to place first in the long jump, while sophomore Carolynn Hine (Wilmington, N.C.) recorded a first-place throw of 113'1" (34.48 meters) in the discus event.
The Midshipmen also won both relay events on Saturday, as the 4x100-meter relay posted a 48.10-second timing and the 4x400-meter group crossed the finish line in 4:04.26.
Navy returns to Annapolis to host its only home meet of the year on Saturday, March 25, at Ingram Field.
