ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Harvard's fifth-ranked varsity boat retained the Adams Cup by recording an 11-second victory over Navy Saturday morning on the Severn River. The 12th-ranked Mids held off No. 16 Penn for second place by 1.2 seconds.
Harvard recorded a time of 6:08.4 over the 2,000-meter course, with Navy placing second in a time of 6:19.7 and Penn third with a clocking of 6:20.9.
Navy and Harvard started the race off fairly equal and held a three-quarter of a boat length lead at the 500-meter mark. The Crimson made a move during the second 500 meters of the race and took nearly a boat length lead at the midpoint of the course, then kept increasing their lead as the race went on.
In the race for second, Navy held a lead over Penn during most of the course, but had to hold off a late charge by the Quakers at the end of the race.
"We did a nice job of holding off Penn at the end," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier. "They had a great comeback at the end of the course."
Harvard also swept the remaining four races on the day.
Navy will next be in action April 29 when the Mids face Columbia in Mercer County, N.J.
