ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore midfielder CiAnna Weikle (Lakeville, Minn.) booted in a goal in the 40th minute, while second-year keeper Lizzie Barnes (New Orleans, La.) made seven saves to lead the Navy women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Mid-Atlantic Region foe George Mason (3-3-1) Friday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. For just the second time in program history, Navy is off to a 7-0-0 start to its season. No Navy squad in its 14-year history has opened the season with an 8-0-0 mark.
"George Mason is a talented team and they played a tough contest tonight," said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. "We had our chances to score more goals tonight, but just couldn't seem to see them through. It's a good win for our program."
The two teams squared off in what proved to be a fierce battle. Both teams had their opportunities to score, while both goalkeepers stepped up to meet the challenge.
The Mids got on the scoreboard just before the half when George Mason keeper Kasey Davenport attempted to clear the ball out of the box. Weikle caught the ball on the run and was able to control it and send a shot just over Davenport's head to give the Mids the advantage.
Navy nearly tacked on a second goal just three minutes later when junior forward Brigitte Fox (La Mesa, Calif.) sent a shot from five yards out, but Davenport was able to intercept it.
In the second half, George Mason came out on fire and seemed to hold the ball on the offensive side of the field for the first 15 minutes. While the Patriots had several goal-scoring opportunities, Barnes did a fine job where she made four of her seven saves in the second stanza.
Midway through the second half, Navy freshman Cassie Barbaresi (Bradenton, Fla.) finessed her way up the middle of the box where she served senior teammate Meggie Curran (Silver Spring, Md.) who just missed the cage in what was the Mids' best scoring opportunity in the second 45 minutes.
The Midshipmen return to action Sunday when they play host to Columbia (2-2-2), who is coming off a 0-0 draw at American Friday evening. Game time for Sunday's contest is set for 1:00 pm at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
