ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's soccer team couldn't generate any offense and suffered its second shutout loss of the season, this time to Massachusetts, 2-0. The Mids drop to 1-2-0 on the season.
The Minuteman defense held Navy to just nine shots for the game, with just three coming on goal to suffer the shutout loss. It marked the second time already this season that Navy has been shut out, as the Mids dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 19-ranked Virginia Tech in the season opener. Though Navy's first three games, the Mids have been outscored, 6-3, and outshot, 30-25.
Massachusetts, meanwhile, took full advantage of its opportunities. The Minutemen got on the board first when Mike DeSantis took a pass from his younger brother, Mark, and sent a 30-yard rocket towards Navy junior goalkeeper Evan Barnes (Columbus, Ohio). The shot slipped through Barnes' hands and into the back of the net for a 1-0 UMass lead in the 35th minute.
Navy controlled most of the second half, dominating the Minutemen territorially for about 25 minutes of the second half, but it was UMass that put the nail in the coffin late in the game. Tony Bassett tallied his second goal of the year as he found a seam in the left slot and sent a low 10-yard roller past Barnes into the right corner for a 2-0 cushion in the 82nd minute. The goal was assisted by Prince Ofosu.
The Mids received a big boost in the second half as returning starters Justin Waskey (Georgetown, Ky.), Kris Huff (Kenifield, Calif.) and Brad Feige (Annandale, Va.) saw their first action of the season after suffering injuries in preseason camp.
Navy outshot the Minutemen, 9-6, but four of UMass' six shots were on goal. Both teams drew seven corner kicks, while Navy had 17 fouls to UMass' 10.
It marked the second straight season that UMass has defeated Navy, 2-0.
Navy will conclude action in the Anders Soccer Classic at noon tomorrow against Gonzaga. Fans showing a ticket stub to Saturday night's football game against East Carolina will be admitted free.
