WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross forced the Navy women's basketball team into 23 turnovers and held the Mids to 31.3-percent shooting from the field in recording a 49-39 victory over the Midshipmen, Tuesday night at the Hart Center in Worcester. The decision ends Navy's two-game winning streak and a six-game losing skid Holy Cross.
"Holy Cross dictated the entire game to us tonight," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "They took our offense out of anything we tried to do, and we let them do whatever they wanted to when they were on offense."
The game seemed to turn very early. The Mids (2-2 Patriot League, 7-10 overall) took a 9-6 lead seven minutes into the game, but the Crusaders (1-3 Patriot League, 6-12 overall) went on a 14-3 run to take a 20-12 lead with five minutes remaining before halftime. The Holy Cross advantage would reach as many as 11 points before the teams went into the locker room at halftime with the Crusaders holding a 25-16 lead.
The Mids were just 5-of-23 from the field and 1-of-8 from behind the three-point line in the first half, while the Crusaders were 11-of-25 from the field and made 3-of-9 three-point attempts.
Navy slowly chipped away at the deficit and eventually sliced the margin down to seven points at 41-34 with four minutes remaining, but Holy Cross would answer with a three point field goal on its next possession to increase its lead back to double figures. The Mids would then climb to within six points at 44-38 with 1:24 left to play, but the Crusaders converted 5-of-6 attempts from the foul line over the remainder of the game to seal the victory.
The Mids, who were averaging 5.33 three-point field goals a game through the opening three Patriot League games, were held to 2-of-15 shooting from beyond the three-point arc.
The Crusaders also forced Navy's leading scorers Carly Meyer (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) and Margaret Knap (Sr., Chicago, Ill.) to a combined 5-of-22 shooting from the field, 2-of-13 three-point shooting and a total of 15 points and 10 turnovers.
Meyer would finish with a Navy-best 10 points -- all coming after halftime -- and nine rebounds to just miss her third-straight double-double. Team captain Kate Hobbs (Sr., Wexford, Pa.) set a career high with four blocked shots to go along with eight points and five boards.
Holy Cross shot 35.3-percent from the field, made 6-of-17 three-point shots and turned the ball over 15 times. The Crusaders were led in scoring by Kaitlin Foley's 17 points.
