WEST POINT, N.Y. - Navy women's track & field sophomore Katie Berkey (Tempe, Ariz.) posted the third-highest pentathlon score in school history to place sixth and lead the Midshipmen to a fifth-place standing after the first day of the Patriot League Championship at Army's Gillis Field House on Friday.
Bucknell holds the lead after the opening day with 14 points, followed by Holy Cross' 10 points, Lafayette's four points, Army's two points and Navy's one point.
Berkey accumulated 3,172 points in the pentathlon (60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800-meter run) to earn Navy's lone point of the opening day. Her total eclipsed her previous pentathlon total of 2,985 points earlier this season and was only 295 points off the program record set by Joanna Helm at the 2000 Patriot League Championship.
Her highest-scoring performance came in the 60-meter hurdles, where she ran the race in 9.82 seconds for 746 points. She also scored above 600 points in the high jump with a 5'1-1/4" (689 points) clearance, an 800-meter run time of 2:30.99 (681 points) and a career-best long jump distance of 17'5-1/4" (645 points).
Also competing in the pentathlon on Friday for the Midshipmen were junior Sabrina Gambill (Bridgewater, Mass.) and senior Ebony Miller (Moreno Valley, Calif.). Gambill sprinted the 60-meter hurdles in 9.43 seconds to highlight her 2,796-point effort, while Miller soared 16'2-1/4" in the long jump to help rack up 2,679 points in the event.
The second day of the Patriot League Championship will begin with the field events at 11 a.m., followed by the first track event at 1:15 p.m.
