Navy Looks to Continue Late-Season Momentum on Tuesday
Navy men's basketball team, winners of three of the last four games, looks to continue its late-season surge with a Tuesday night contest against American at Alumni Hall, beginning at 7:00 pm. The Mids own a 14-13 overall record and with one more win will guarantee a record of at least .500 for the first time since 2000-01. More importantly, wins in the final two games will help Navy to a fourth-place finish in the Patriot League and give the Mids a first-round home game in the Patriot League Tournament.
Prior to the game, Navy will honor its lone senior on the roster, Calvin White. The contest will mark the final home regular-season game for the Thornton, Colo., native.
Navy is coming off an emotional 76-68 Star Game victory over Army on Saturday, in front of a raucous 5,247 fans at Alumni Hall, the ninth-largest crowd in Alumni Hall history. In that game, Greg Sprink scored 19 points, all in the second half, and Trey Stanton and Kaleo Kina chipped in with 15 and 14 points, respectively. The Mids shot 47.7 percent from the floor, and connected on 12-of-24 three-pointers in the win. Navy converted on 14-of-18 free throws in the second half to help salt the game away.
American, meanwhile, hasn't played since Valentine's Day, a 64-49 win over Army in Washington, D.C. The Eagles ener the contest with a 13-13 overall mark and are 5-7 in Patriot League play. If Navy and American were to tie in the standings, Navy would own the tiebreaker over the Eagles, via Navy's 70-65 victory over Lehigh on Feb. 7.
American is led by All-Patriot League candidate Andre Ingram, who averages 14.6 ppg and 4.7 rpg. Arvydas Eitutavicius averages 11.8 ppg and is the league's top free throw shooter at 92.1 percent. As a team, American is shooting 42.5 percent from the field, averaging 64.8 ppg. Defensively, foes are shooting 40.8 percent against the Eagles, averaging 63.0 ppg.
