ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy tennis team closed out play at the Navy Gold Invitational by winning four singles matches over Georgetown Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.
The Hoyas began the day by winning each of the four doubles matches contested on the afternoon, winning by scores of 8-6 at Nos. 1 and 4 and winning in a tiebreaker at No. 3. Navy's number one team of Zach Nicholson (Fr., Bowie, Md.) and Johnny Waters (Sr., Papillion, Neb.) were up a break of serve late in their match against Adam Gross and Ned Samuelson before falling to the Hoyas, while Nick Birger (So., Belleville, Ill.) and Jason Hill (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) were leading 7-4 with two breaks of serve over Dave Tillem and Ken Wong before losing in a tiebreaker.
"A couple of the doubles matches could have gone our way," said Navy head coach John Officer. "Nick and Jason are generally pretty strong when they have a lead late in a match."
Wining in singles for the Mids were Waters at No. 2, Owen Bullard (So., Concord, N.C.) at No. 6, Nicholson at No. 7 and Birger at No. 8. Waters, Bullard and Birger all won their respective matches in straight sets.
"I was very pleased with the way Zach Nicholson played today," said Officer. "This was the first doubles match of the year for him, but he stepped right in and played very well. He then carried that strong play over into singles."
Despite the loss Sunday, Birger and Hill won the No. 3 doubles flight title at the three-day Navy Gold Invitational. Additional Navy players to win their respective flights were Birger at No. 8 singles and the No. 4 doubles tandem of Jared Teichman (Fr., Blue Bell, Pa.) and Chris Worosz (Fr., Little Egg Harbor, N.J). Nicholson, who played at No. 7 singles Friday and Saturday, tied for that flight's singles title with Georgetown's Tim Walsh.
The fall season continues for the Navy tennis team this week with the ITA Northeast Region Championship. Competition at the invitational tournament begins Thursday at New Haven, Conn.
