PRINCETON, N.J. - Navy's defense limited Princeton's offense to 79 yards of total offense to record its second shutout of the season in a 52-0 win at Powers Field at Princeton Stadium in sprint football action on Friday night. The Midshipmen improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the CSFL, while the Tigers dropped to 0-4 on the year and 0-3 in league play.
Navy's first shutout of the year came in a 20-0 triumph at Randolph-Macon JV on Sept. 14. The Midshipmen have blanked the Tigers in each of the last-four meetings, a scoreless streak that was extended to 243 minutes and 18 seconds. The Mids have won each of their last-14 games, spanning back to the 2006 campaign.
The Navy defense held Princeton to one yard rushing on 28 carries, while containing the passing game to 78 yards on 11-of-32 attempts with two interceptions. The Midshipmen also registered six sacks and recovered a fumble.
Chris Combellick (Sr./Carmel, Ind.) led the team with five tackles and a pass breakup, while K.C. Middleton (Jr./Jacksonville, Fla.) and Tyler Hawkins (Jr./Canyon Country, Calif.) each produced four stops. Luke Pye (So./Cartersville, Ga.) came up with two sacks, in addition to an interception by both Kyle Hayhurst (Jr./Pleasanton, Calif.) and Mike Nolan (So./Carmichael, Calif.).
Meanwhile, Navy's offense totaled 436 yards of total offense in the win. The Mids rushed for 254 yards on 46 carries (5.5 ypc) and threw for 182 yards on 11-of-20 passing.
Alfonso Meidus (Sr./Leechburg, Pa.) led the Midshipmen rushing attack with 61 yards on six attempts with a score. Enrique Harris (Sr./Crawfordville, Fla.), Nate Stewart (Jr./Fitzgerald, Ga.), Jordan Foley (Fr./Butler, Pa.) and Vince DeBenedetti (Fr./Tinley Park, Ill.) ran for 58, 47, 32 and 28 yards, respectively. Harris, Stewart and DeBenedetti all found the endzone once on the night.
D.J. Green (Sr./Indianapolis, Ind.) completed 6-of-9 passes for 98 yards with two scores, while Tyler Terronez (So./Mechanicsburg, Pa.) threw for 47 yards with a touchdown and Jon DeWitt (Sr./Mendham, N.J.) recorded 37 yards through the air.
Nash Bagby (Sr./Waco, Texas), Tommy Tellson (Sr./Bedford, Texas) and Kaleb Kaetterhenry (So./McKinney, Texas) all hauled in two passes for 62, 25 and 24 yards, respectively. Bagby, Tellson and Steve Friedrick (So./Patchogue, N.Y.) all caught a touchdown pass.
After a punt on its first possession, Navy scored touchdowns on five of its next-six possessions. Green found Tellson from 10 yards out before Harris scampered 52 yards for a score to put the Mids ahead 14-0 in the first quarter. On Navy's next drive, Green and Friedrick connected from 29 yards out to push the lead to 21-0. Meidus ran in from 24 yards with two minutes remaining in the first half, followed by a DeBenedetti one-yard plunge on the opening drive of the third quarter.
The Midshipmen tacked on 17 points in the final stanza. Terronez completed a 44-yard touchdown pass to Bagby, followed by David Reifenberg (Jr./Ft. Wayne, Ind.) 32-yard field goal and a 14-yard rushing touchdown by Stewart to close out the scoring.
The Midshipmen will return to action next Friday, Oct. 24, when they take on Penn (4-1, 1-1 CSFL) in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but there will be a $5 charge to park at the stadium.
