LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell offense outhit Navy by nearly 100 points in recording a three-set victory over the Midshipmen, Saturday evening at Davis Gym in Lewisburg, Pa., in a Patriot League volleyball match between the teams. The Bison (9-14, 4-3 Patriot League) totaled a hitting percentage of .277 and held the Mids (13-8, 2-5) to a mark of .184 in posting the 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 victory.
Navy played the match without the services of Alexa Gibbs (Sr., Springfield, Ill.), who ranks among the Patriot League leaders in kills, hitting percentage and service aces. Gibbs injured an ankle during the first set of Navy's loss to Colgate Friday night.
"We fought hard and were in every set tonight, but we just couldn't get the offense going when we really needed it," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob.
Navy had a great chance to win the opening set of the match. The Mids took an early 11-6 lead and still held a four-point advantage late in the set at 19-15. The Bison would score eight of the next nine points, however, to take a 23-20 lead and control of the set. Kaitlin Segal accounted for four kills during the 8-1 run for Bucknell.
The Mids then held a slim 11-10 lead midway through the second set until a 4-0 run gave Bucknell a 14-11 advantage. The Bison extended the margin to as many as five points at 19-14 before the teams traded points over the remainder of the set.
Bucknell held a narow lead throughout the early part of set number three, with the Bison never able to take a lead of more than three points and Navy never able to record the tying point. The Bison held a 21-18 lead until kills from Jessie Sims (Sr., Etowah, N.C.) and Aubrey Manes (Jr., Pratt, Kan.) made it a one-point set for the eighth time. Liz Hazuka promptly knocked down back-to-back kills for Bucknell to give the Bison a 23-20 lead and some breathing room from the Mids. After a Navy timeout, the Bison scored a point on a block before a Navy attack error ended the nearly 90-minute match.
In addition to the advantage in hitting percentage, Bucknell also held statistical leads over Navy in kills (32-32), service aces (6-2) and digs (44-34). The Mids posted 7.0 team blocks in the match, with the Bison tallying 5.0 blocks.
Sims was the lone Mid to reach double figures in kills with 10 and finished the match one dig shy of recording a double-double. Manes and Krista Eschelman (Jr., Germantown, Md.) both added eight kills to the Navy offense, while Holly Berger (Fr., Claremont, Calif.), with 11 digs, and Maida Kalic' (Fr., Vernon, N.Y.), with five blocks, paced the Navy defense.
Bucknell's Kyleigh McAhern tallied 14 kills and Segal posted 13 kills to lead all players in the match.
Navy will open a stretch of three matches in five days Tuesday night when the Mids play host to Loyola at 6 p.m. in Macdonough Hall.
