ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Loyola outhit Navy by over 100 points on its way to recording a three-set sweep over the Midshipmen, Tuesday night in a non-conference volleyball match at Macdonough Hall in Annapolis. The Greyhounds totaled a .224 hitting percentage and held the Mids to a mark of .116 in winning the 25-20, 25-20, 25-22 decision.
"Our loss last year to Loyola was one of the most disappointing losses of the 2007 season, and tonight's loss has to be one of, if not the most disappointing loss of the 2008 season," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "We were very passive tonight. We kept waiting for things to happen instead of attacking the ball and making things happen ourselves. We didn't display any aggressiveness out there."
The first and second sets were very similar in that the Greyhounds (5-20) slowly built themselves some breathing room after a tight start to each set. Loyola turned a 12-11 lead into an 18-13 advantage in the first set, then used a 3-0 run in the second set to take an 18-15 lead. Both cushions were enough to hold off the Mids (13-9).
The third set was tied 14 times up until the score reached 18-18. With Loyola holding a 21-20 lead, the Greyhounds received kills from Karlee Woodward and Stasia Collins to take a 23-20 advantage. Kills by Navy's Krista Eschelman (Jr., Germantown, Md.) and Abbie Merkl (Jr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) sliced the deficit down to one point at 23-22, but Nina Camaioni knocked down back-to-back kills for Loyola to give the Greyhounds the win.
Take away the large difference in hitting percentage and the two teams produced nearly identical statistics during the match. Loyola held a 37-33 lead in kills, the Mids held a 46-43 advantage in digs and both teams recorded 5.0 team blocks. Though Navy recorded three service aces to Loyola's two, both teams committed 10 service errors.
Five different Mids recorded at least five kills in the match, with Jessie Sims (Sr., Etowah, N.C.) leading the team with eight and Alexa Gibbs (Sr., Springfield, Ill.) adding seven. Sims also led the Navy defense with 15 digs in the match.
Christina Greenup paced the Loyola offense 12 kills, with Camaioni tallying a double-double of 10 kills and 14 digs.
Navy will return to Patriot League play this weekend when the Mids play host to Holy Cross Friday (7 p.m.) and Army -- in the Star Match between the teams -- Saturday at 8 p.m. Both matches will be played in the Wesley A. Brown Field House.
