ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Pollsters have noticed the Navy men's basketball red-hot start this year as the Mids earned votes in both the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll and the Associated Press Top 25 poll released on Monday. Navy is off to its best start in almost 10 years at 5-1 and will host a strong Texas-San Antonio team tonight at Alumni Hall.
After dropping its season opener to Towson, Navy has rattled off five straight wins by an average margin of over 12 points per game. Two of the wins have come in overtime against William & Mary and Radford, while the other three have come by double-digits.
Navy received one vote in the Associated Press national poll, garnering a 25th-place vote. The one point ranks Navy tied for 18th with Nebraska among teams receiving votes and 43rd overall in the AP poll. Just three teams that are currently in the Patriot League have ever been ranked. Holy Cross has been ranked for 64 weeks in its program's history, Navy for 23 weeks and Bucknell for one week. Only Bucknell has been ranked as a Patriot League member, being ranked for one week in the 2005-06 season.
Navy joins American and Holy Cross as Patriot League teams to have received votes in the AP poll this year.
Meanwhile, Navy garnered two votes in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll. The Mids are one of four Patriot League teams (Lehigh - 16th; American - 21st; Colgate - RV) mentioned in the poll. The poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit League, Sun Belt and West Coast. Select coaches from those leagues comprise the rankings committee.
Navy will host Texas-San Antonio tonight at 7:00 pm in Alumni Hall. Tickets can be purchased at the Alumni Hall ticket windows, which will open one hour before tip.
