ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Maryland won each of the four doubles matches and seven of the eight singles matches against the Navy tennis team Sunday on the final day of the Navy Invitational in Annapolis. Six of the eight singles matches were extended to three sets, with the Terrapins winning five of those six contests.

"It was a tale of two matches," said Navy head coach John Officer. "Maryland overpowered us in doubles to start the day, and that usually doesn't happen. We were not ready for the pace they put on the ball. We wanted to neutralize their power heading into the singles matches and we did just that. We did a good job of placing the ball into spots where it wouldn't hurt us."

Navy's lone victory on the day came at No. 2 singles where Owen Bullard (So., Concord, N.C.) posted a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 win over Jonathan Ribaste. Other Mids who played into a third set in singles were Johnny Waters (Sr., Papillion, Neb.) at No. 2, Ramsey Lemaich (Jr., Danville, Calif.) at No. 4, Zach Nicholson (Fr., Bowie, Md.) at No. 5, Nick Birger (So., Belleville, Ill.) at No. 7 and Eddie Konrad (Fr., Woodlands, Texas) at No. 8.

Additionally, Marcus Rebersak (Fr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) lost a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) decision to Andy Orban at No. 1 singles.

"We played Maryland during the spring of 2008 and lost 7-0 and won only one set in singles," said Officer. "To have six matches go into three sets, while playing without our number one singles player Nate Nelms (Sr., St. Mary's Ga.), shows we have improved a great deal since the spring. We want to continue that improvement throughout the fall."

Navy's fall season will continue in two weeks when the Mids take part in the North Carolina Invitational, Sept. 26-28 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
