CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy senior Andrew Grant (Athens, Ga.) has been named the Patriot League Men's Track Performer of the week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The weekly league accolade is the first in the four-year career of the Midshipmen's indoor team captain. It is also marks the second overall honor garnered by the Navy men this season.
Grant's efforts highlighted Navy's performance in Saturday's five-team meet held in Annapolis, the second of four-straight home meets for the Mids.
The Georgia native paced the field in 3,000-meter run, winning by nearly nine seconds with an IC4A-qualifying time of 8:24.18. Grant also had a hand in the Mids' winning distance medley relay performance, running the 1,600-meter leg for a Navy foursome that teamed up to produce a clocking of 10:13.78
Meanwhile, senior Chris Bordino (Gastonia, N.C.) was named to the Patriot League weekly honor roll on the strength of a career-best performance in the weight throw.
The reigning league champion in the event, Bordino continued his strong start to 2008-09 when he uncorked a toss of 60'5" (18.41m) to take home runner-up honors. The veteran thrower's previous best mark of 58'8" (17.88-meters) was set in Navy's Star Meet victory over Army last February.
Navy will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 17, when it hosts Mount St. Mary's, UNC-Wilmington and William & Mary in a four-team scored meet at the Wesley A. Brown Field House. The field events will commence with the weight throw at 11:00 am, while the track events are slated for a noon start.
