PHILADELPHIA - The Navy crew teams totaled seven first-place times to highlight their performances on the Schuylkill River at the Navy Day Regatta on Saturday.
The men's heavyweight crew team led the way with four first-place times, including the varsity eight race. The Midshipmen covered the 4,000-meter course in 12:11.96 to finish 5.81 seconds ahead of second-place Penn Athletic Club. Navy's junior varsity eight won its race by 13.57 seconds with a time of 12:55.64, prior to which the collegiate four boat won with a 14:16.83 clocking. Navy also boasted the top-two times in the freshmen four race, winning with a 14:29.71 showing and placing second with a 14:45.63 performance.
"Today was a good day overall for us," stated Navy men's heavyweight crew head coach Rick Clothier. "I'm pleased with our performance and everybody rowed to their potential. We are looking forward to a good week of practice."
The men's lightweight crew team also posted a pair of victories on Saturday. The Midshipmen led the field of 10 boats in the varsity eight race with a time of 12:16.09, 15.55 seconds ahead of second-place Delaware. The Midshipmen also boasted the top-three times in the varsity four event, winning with a 14:06.55 clocking, followed by 14:31.83 and 15:04.12 showings.
The women's crew team also won the junior varsity eight event with a time of 14:46.91 to edge out second-place Penn by 0.43-second. In the varsity eight race, the Midshipmen placed second out of 20 boats with a 14:02.24 clocking, bested only by Penn's 13:55.04 showing.
"I was happy with everything except our performance in the varsity eight race," stated Navy women's crew head coach Mike Hughes. "I'm not happy finishing second behind Penn, but we will have our shot against them in two weeks at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta."
The Navy men's heavyweight and lightweight crew teams will return to action Sunday, Oct. 18, when they head up to Boston for the Head of the Charles Regatta. The Navy women's crew team will return to the water on Saturday, Oct. 24, for the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.
