CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy freshman Jasmine Pitts (Long Beach, N.Y.) garnered the first rookie-of-the-week accolade for the 2009-10 Patriot League women's basketball season, the league office announced Monday.
Pitts started both of Navy's game this past weekend at the season-opening Phoenix Classic in Elon, N.C. She played a team-high 72 minutes over the course of Navy's wins over High Point (70-67 in overtime) and Elon (68-61) and finished second on the team in scoring with 28 points.
She began her collegiate career by totaling 10 points, four rebounds and two assists against the Panthers, then posted 18 points, five assists and four steals (all Navy team highs) against the Phoenix. Additionally, Pitts was a combined 6-of-8 from the foul line in the last minute of play in the two games.
Navy will attempt to start the 2009-10 season with a 3-0 record later Monday night when the Mids play at Ohio. The Mids will then open the home portion of their season this weekend when they play host to the Navy Classic. Friday's games feature Liberty playing Tulane at 4:45 p.m., followed by Navy taking on Loyola at 7 p.m. The consolation game for the tournament will be played Saturday at 4:45 p.m., with the title tilt slated to tip at 7 p.m.
