ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The final contest in a stretch of four consecutive games played on the road by the Navy women's basketball team will take place Wednesday night when the Midshipmen play at UMBC in a game slated to tip at 7 p.m. in the school's RAC Arena.
UMBC's web site, www.UMBCRetrievers.com(,) will be providing free live statistics from the game. In addition, fans can view a video stream of the game for $4.95.
The Mids have posted a 2-1 record during this eight-day period of road games. Navy began its road swing by recording a 52-43 victory over Delaware State before traveling to San Antonio, Texas, to take part in the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic. The first game of the tournament saw the Mids drop a 69-57 decision to the classic-host and two-time defending Southland Conference-champion Roadrunners before the Mids bounced back with a 67-33 win over Western Illinois.
Cassie Consedine (Jr., Bartlesville, Okla.) averaged a double-double for the Mids during Navy's three games last week. She tallied eight points and 12 boards against the Hornets, 12 points and 10 rebounds against the Roadrunners, and 15 points and 10 caroms against the Leathernecks. Consedine also blocked at least two shots in each of the games and ended the week with a total of eight blocks.
For her efforts in Texas she was named to the all-tournament team at the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic.
Consedine was far from the only Mid to put together a solid week. Kristin Bowen (Sr., Monroeville, N.J.) scored a career-high 17 points against UTSA and averaged 9.7 points per game on the week, K.C. Gordon (Sr., Vienna, Va.) averaged 10.0 points and 4.7 rebounds a game, while Angela Myers (Jr., San Antonio, Texas) posted averages of 11.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game.
Navy enters Wednesday's game with a 6-2 record on the season, which includes a 5-1 record in games played away from Annapolis.
UMBC, meanwhile, has posted a 3-2 record on the year. Included on its ledger was a 68-63 victory over Bucknell this past weekend.
Four players on the UMBC team have compiled double figure scoring averages this season. Leading the Retrievers is Michelle Kurowski with an average of 19.4 points per game. She also ranks second on the team with a rebounding average of 8.4 boards per game.
Navy holds a 14-10 lead in the all-time series with UMBC, but the Mids have lost four of the last five meetings to the Retrievers. This includes eight-point setbacks to UMBC in each of the last two seasons. Last year's game, an 85-77 contest that also was played in Baltimore, saw UMBC's Carlee Cassidy and Kurowski score 32 and 30 points, respectively, to help the Retrievers to the win. Five Mids ended up scoring in double figures on the night, with Consedine's 20 points (and 12 rebounds) leading the Navy effort.
