Long-Range Shooting Not Enough for Mids in Loss

Dec. 11, 2009

Final Stats

NEWARK, Del. -- The Navy women's basketball team connected on an arena-record 12 three-point field goals, but Delaware scored the last eight points of the game to tally a 67-50 victory over the Mids Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Del.

Delaware (5-3) slowly inched its way out to a 15-8 lead at the start of the game, but a Cassie Consedine (Jr., Bartlesville, Okla.) three-point field goal gave the Mids (7-4) a 16-15 lead midway through the first half. The Blue Hens responded by going on a 12-3 run to build a 27-19 advantage with 2:30 left to play in the first half before taking a 33-25 lead into halftime.

Delaware forced the Navy offense out on the perimeter for most of the first half. Six of Navy's eight field goals made in the first half were from outside of the three-point arc, as well as 15 of its 22 field goal attempts.

Additionally, the Blue Hens held a 21-9 advantage on the glass over the opening 20 minutes of play.

The Blue Hens scored the opening five points of the second half to quickly take a 38-25 lead less than 90 seconds into the frame. For most of the remainder of the game, though Navy was unable to slice into the margin much, Delaware also was unable to pull away from the Mids. The gap between the teams hovered between 10 and 15 points until a Kristin Bowen (Sr., Monroeville, N.J.) three-point field goal allowed Navy to close to within 59-50 with 1:46 showing on the clock.

Elena Delle Donne connected on a field goal attempt on Delaware's ensuing trip down the floor, then Bowen missed a three-point attempt for the Mids on their return trip. The Mids were forced to foul and Delaware connected on each of their six free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the victory.

"We had a nice spurt in the second half," said Navy head coach Stefanie Pemper. "We also took better care of the ball after halftime. I liked seeing the competitive fire out of some of our players.

"This was a close and even single-digit game until the very end. We have to do a better job of staying focused. We are still a work in progress in terms of our court leadership."

Navy ended the game connecting on 12-of-34 three-point field goal attempts, which was not only a Bob Carpenter Center record for treys made in the game, it also was just two triples shy of tying the Navy and Patriot League record for three-pointers made in a contest. Navy's remaining 14 points in the game were the result of 4-of-9 shooting on two-point field goal attempts and a 6-of-7 effort from the foul line.

"We didn't show enough different looks on offense against their zone defense in the first half," said Pemper. "I take some of the blame for that. In the second half we were able to get some movement and that allowed our offense to open up a bit more. We should have done more of that sooner."

Delaware shot 44.4 percent from the field in the game, 40-percent from three-point range (4-of-10) and was 15-of-18 from the charity stripe. After the Blue Hens held a 12-rebound advantage over the Mids in the first half, Delaware hauled in just six more boards than Navy did in the second half.

"We had a hard time keeping Delaware off of the glass and the free throw line," said Pemper.

Navy also narrowly won the turnover margin after halftime as the Mids committed six second-half miscues while forcing the Blue Hens into seven turnovers. Delaware would score 19 points in the game off of Navy turnovers, while the Mids tallied 11 points following turnovers by the Mids.

Bowen ended the game connecting on 5-of-10 three-point attempts to lead the Mids in scoring with 15 points. She tallied 12 of those points in the second half. Bowen was joined in double figures by Consedine, who tallied 14 points and a game-high three steals.

Delle Donne scored 16 first-half points before adding 10 more in the second half to lead all players in the game with 26. She was 11-of-17 from the field, 2-of-3 from three-point range and converted both of her free throw attempts. Her teammates Danielle Parker and Tesia Harris contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Navy will play host to Towson Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
