Results - Pentathlon Scores
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Katie Berkey (Tempe, Ariz.) and freshman Arian Davis (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) both landed spots on the school's all-time top-10 list in the pentathlon with second and third-place finishes, respectively, to give the Navy women's track & field squad the opening day lead at the 2009 Patriot League Indoor Championships at the Wesley A. Brown Field House on Friday afternoon.
The multi-event duo combined to put the Midshipmen atop the team standings with 14 points. Holy Cross follows in second with 10 points, while Lehigh and Army round out the scoring teams with six and one point(s), respectively.
"It was certainly a great way to kick off the weekend," said Navy head coach Carla Criste, who led the Mids to their fourth consecutive undefeated indoor regular season this winter. "Katie and Arian performed exceptionally well for us across the board. Hopefully, we can build on this effort and really come out strong tomorrow."
Berkey established a new PR for the second time in the last eight days with her 3,232-point, runner-up effort en route to earning All-Patriot League status for the first time in her four-year career.
The versatile senior's score ranks third on the all-time Navy ledger, exceeding her previous-best of 3,180 set in last Thursday's regular season finale in Annapolis. The effort was only 235 points off the program record set by Joanna Helm at the 2000 Patriot League Championship.
Berkey's top performance of the evening came in the high jump, where she bested the field by matching the team's season-best clearance of 5-5 (1.65m) to earn 795 points.
Entering the competitions's final event, the 800-meter run, she trailed Holy Cross' Olivia Pruszko, who won the league championship in the event as a freshman in 2007, by just 31 points (2,637-2,606). Pruszko, however, would lead from wire-to-wire and pace the 800m field by more than nine seconds to win the event in 2:22.10 and earn 10 team points for the Crusaders.
Meanwhile, Davis made a dazzling debut in the five-event competition at her first Patriot League Championship, accumulating 3,182 points to collect third-place honors and earn six additional points for the Mids. With the standout performance, the Navy freshman now owns the fourth-highest pentathlon score in program history.
Davis' top efforts came in the 60-hurdles, where she finished third with a PR time of 9.34 to garner 840 points, and in the high jump, where she tied for second with a clearance at 5-2.5 (1.59m) for 724 points. She also scored above 600 points in the 800m with a time of 2:34.30.
Also participating in the pentathlon for the Midshipmen were juniors Mary Bellis (San Luis Obispo, Calif.), Krys Porter Lott (Papillion, Neb.) and Krystina Johnson (Savannah, Ga.). Porter Lott led the multi-event trio with 2,703 points to finish 11th overall.
