2008 Navy Women's Soccer Year-In-Review
Women's Soccer (15-4-3, 5-0-2 in the Patriot League - Regular Season Champions)
* Navy won its third outright regular-season Patriot League title and its first since 2001 ... the Mids have claimed at least a share of the conference title seven times in the last 11 years.
* Navy finished conference play with an unbeaten mark (5-0-2) and earned the right to host the Patriot League Tournament for the third time in program history ... the Mids previously accomplished this feat in 1998 (5-0-1) and 2002 (4-0-3).
* Navy's 75.0 winning percentage was the fifth-highest in program history and the 22nd best percentage nationally.
* Navy reached double figure wins for the 14th consecutive year, while also turning in a winning record for the 14th straight season ... during this span, the Mids are one of only 10 Division I teams to have won 10 or more games in every season.
* Navy made its third consecutive Patriot League postseason tournament appearance and 12th in its 15 years of league membership ... the Mids have reached each of the last three league championships.
* Navy concluded the year with a 10-3-2 mark at home ... it was the fourth time in program history and the second time in the last three years that the Mids have won 10 or more games at home ... over the last three seasons, Navy boasts an impressive 33-4-3 mark at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
* The Class of 2009 finished with a four-year mark of 60-19-10, good for the highest winning percentage (.739) of any class in school history ... the 60 wins tied the Class of 2005 for the most wins in program history.
* Navy boasted the Patriot League's highest scoring offense, scoring 1.77 goals per game, and its least scored-upon defense with its 0.60 goals-against average ... the Mids have fielded the conference's top-ranked defense in three consecutive seasons.
* Navy finished the season ranked eighth nationally in save percentage (86.5) and 12th in both goals-against average (0.60) and shutout percentage (59.1).
* Navy shutout a conference-high 13 opponents ... the Mids limited the opposition to one or fewer goals in 19 of their 22 contests.
* Navy earned one of the four weekly women's soccer awards in 10 of 11 weeks and collected a league-high total of 13 awards.
* Navy played in a school-record eight overtime contests ... its four overtime wins were the most in a single season.

* Navy had five double-figure scorers (Calderon, Laraway, Moeller, White, Youker) and 21 different players with at least a point (including 13 goal scorers) ... eight Mids either met or surpassed previous career-best point totals during the fall (Abid, Calderon, Grijalva, Laraway, Weikle, White, Youker, Young)
* Navy's 1-0 overtime win over league foe Bucknell on October 4, marked Gabarra's 200th career coaching victory.
* Navy's 1-0 win in its regular season finale at Colgate was the 200th in the 16-year history of the women's soccer program.
* Navy rarely relinquished a lead, winning all 14 games in which it was the first team to score.
Memorable Games of 2008
Aug. 31 - Navy 2, UC Davis 1 (OT)
DAVIS, Calif. - Junior defensive stalwart Shelly Moeller headed in a free-kick from teammate Kristen Laraway in the 94th minute to cap a thrilling late-game comeback and give Navy a 2-1 overtime victory over UC Davis.
Senior keeper Lizzie Barnes played terrifically, tying a career-high with 10 saves, and classmate Sam Schroth netted the equalizer in the 71st minute to force the extra period and set the stage for Moeller's heroics.
Oct. 4 - Navy 1, Bucknell 0 (OT)
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -In one of the team's most complete games, senior Kristen Laraway drove home a picture-perfect blast from 20 yards out to send Navy to an exhilarating 1-0 overtime victory over visiting Bucknell in the Patriot League opener for both teams. With the win, Coach Gabarra joined an elite group of head coaches with 200 career wins.
Oct. 26 - Navy 3, Holy Cross 2 (2OT)
WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Anastasia Abid put home a rebound in the 107th minute to lift the Mids to a 3-2 double overtime victory at Holy Cross. The win gave Navy control of its own destiny and paved the way for the team to capture its seventh regular season title.
Nov. 1 - Navy 1, Colgate 0
HAMILTON, N.Y. - Quite fittingly, it was senior captain Julie Reynold's first goal of the season which proved to be the difference as the Mids secured the No. 1 seed and won their first outright Patriot League regular season crown since 2001. With the win, Navy finished the seven-game conference slate with an unbeaten mark for just the third time in school history.
Nov. 7 - Navy 1, Colgate 0 (OT) - PL Semifinals
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Freshman Kate Herren scored her first career game-winner just 5:52 into the first overtime period to put an end to a closely contested semifinal contest and send the top-seeded Midshipmen to the conference championship game for the third-straight year.
Individual Awards
* Senior Lizzie Barnes was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year for the second time in her career ... she is the only keeper in league history to win the award twice.
* Junior Shelly Moeller was named the Patriot League Defender of the Year for the second time in her career ... she is one of two Mids (Nicole Aunapu '99) and three players in league history to have earned the honor twice in her career.
* Senior Lizzie Barnes was named the Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year for Women's Soccer ... she is the third Mid to garner the academic distinction.
* Six players were named All-Patriot League, tying for the conference's highest number of honorees ... Senior Lizzie Barnes and junior Shelly Moeller were both named first-team members for the second time in their careers, while the senior trio of Kristen Laraway, team captain Julie Reynolds and Carey Young, along with sophomore Carissa Youker were named to the second team ... Reynolds and Moeller earned all-league recognition for the third time in their respective careers.
* Junior Shelly Moeller garnered Second-Team NSCAA and Third-Team Soccer Buzz All-Mid-Atlantic recognition ... it was the second time in her career that she received all-region honors from both outlets.
* Senior Lizzie Barnes was named a First-Team Academic All-American ... she is the second player to earn first-team honors twice during her career, joining former standout Nicole Aunapu who accomplished the feat in 1997 and '98.
* Senior Lizzie Barnes and junior Shelly Moeller were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District II First Team ... the Mids have now had at least two members receive first-team all-district kudos in three consecutive seasons.
* Senior Lizzie Barnes and junior Shelly Moeller were named to the NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-East Region team as second-team selections.
* Three players were named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team, including senior CiAnna Weikle, junior Shelly Moeller and freshman Kate Herren ... Herren was the only league freshman named to the 11-member team.
Individual and Miscellaneous Notes
* Senior Lizzie Barnes -Finished the year ranked 19th in the country in save percentage (85.9) and 22nd in goals-against average (0.63) -Posted eight shutouts to finish as the program's all-time leader with 29 ... the eight shutouts is a Navy senior class record ... it also ties her 2007 output for the fourth-highest single-season total in school history. -Also set a senior class record with a 0.65 GAA in 2008... she graduates as Navy's career leader goals-against average (0.65). -Made 71 saves increasing her career total to 224, moving her into third all-time on the school save ledger. -Her 84.8 career save percentage (224 Sv, 40 GA) stands second all-time in school history
* Senior Carey Young set a new school record for career games played (89) ... Young, who earned her first career All-Patriot League laurel, put together a banner year with highs in both points (9) and assists (5). Four of her five helpers came during league action - tying her for the conference lead ... her 73 starts ranks 10th all-time in school history.
* Sophomore Christine Calderon tied a program record with three assists in the Mids' 5-1 win over Mount St. Mary's on Sept. 19 ... Calderon was the team's primary table-setter with seven assists - the second highest total in the Patriot League.
* Sophomore Carissa Youker recorded a team-best five game-winning goals tying Michelle Nance '00 for the sixth-best single-season mark in school history ... Youker is now tied for seventh all-time with six career game-winners.
