Myers Earns Additional League Honor

March 6, 2009

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy women's basketball player Angela Myers (So., San Antonio, Texas) received her second postseason accolade of the week Friday night when she was named as the Patriot League's Defensive Player of the Year. The announcement and presentation of her award was made during the Patriot League Tournament Banquet held at the Hotel Bethlehem in Bethlehem, Pa.

She is the first Navy player to win the award in the five years it has been presented.

Earlier in the week Myers garnered Second-Team All-Patriot League laurels.

Myers ranks second in the Patriot League in steals and, despite being just 5-foot, 5-inches tall, ranks sixth in the league in defensive rebounds and fourth in overall rebounds-per-game average.

Her 68 steals this year set a new school sophomore class record and ranks sixth overall at Navy. Additionally, her 123 career steals is the second-highest tally for any Navy player through the end of their respective sophomore seasons.

Myers also was an offensive threat this season. She ranks second on the Navy team with a scoring average of 10.1 points per game and with a 3.6 assists-per-game average. With 104 assists this season she became the first player in Navy history to tally 100-assist seasons as both a freshman and sophomore.

Additional major individual award winners presented during the banquet were Lehigh's Erica Prosser as the player of the year, Bucknell's Trisha Krewson as the rookie of the year and Lehigh's Sue Troyan as the coach of the year.

Navy will open play in the Patriot League Tournament Saturday night against Bucknell. The quarterfinal round game between the sixth-seeded Midshipmen and the third-seeded Bison will tip at 7:30 p.m. from Stabler Arena in Bethlehem. All Navy postseason games can be heard live locally on WNAV-AM 1430, with an audio and video stream available to Navy All-Access subscribers via www.NavySports.com(.)
