PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Penn's Chrisitan Barreiro scored on a penalty kick just 1:25 into the contest and the Quaker defense stifled Navy's offensive attack in a 2-0 blacking on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon at Rhodes Field. The loss snaps Navy's three-game winning streak and drops Navy's record to 4-2-0.
Penn, last year's Ivy League champion, improved to 3-1-2 on the season.
"Penn's a very good team and were just a little bit too much for us," said Navy head coach Dave Brandt. "We made two bad defensive mistakes, which gave them their goals. That was the ballgame right there."
Just 1:25 into the contest, Navy committed a foul in the box to award the Quakers a penalty kick. Barreiro calmly drilled the shot into the back of the net, putting Navy in an early hole.
"When you give them a goal right off the bat, they make it very difficult to come back on them with their defense," said Brandt. "They took away some of the things we wanted to do, and made it tough on us."
Navy's best opportunity came about 15 minutes into the game, when freshman David Jackson (Forest, Va.) found some room and sent a low rocket towards the goal. The ball had Penn goalkeeper Ben Berg beaten, but just slid outside the right post.
Penn would add an insurance goal in the 85th minute, when Tobi Olopade took a Zach Barnett throw-in and weaved his way through the Navy defense, hitting the inside of the far right post with a low shot for a 2-0 advantage.
Navy managed just two shots on the afternoon, both coming in the first half by Jackson. Penn had 15 shots for the contest and both teams had two corner kicks. Navy was whistled for four fouls during the match, while Penn had two.
Tyler Bristol (Clinton, Conn.) recorded seven saves in goal, including many spectacular efforts to keep Navy in the game.
Navy returns to Philadelphia on Wednesday night for a 7:00 pm match at La Salle. Navy will then host its Patriot League opener next Saturday night, when arch-rival Army comes to Annapolis for an 8:00 pm start.
