Navy Earns 2-0 Shutout Victory at Delaware State

Sept. 27, 2009

Box Score

DOVER, Del. - Freshman Brittany Fruin (Reston, Va.) and sophomore Annie Kendzior (Southlake, Texas) each scored goals to pace the Navy women's soccer team (9-2-1) in a 2-0 shutout victory over Delaware State (1-7-1) on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

The Mids scored a goal in each half and registered a total of 15 shots on target, while holding the host Hornets without a single shot on goal for the duration of the 90-minute contest.

The win is Navy's fourth in five games and second in as many years against Delaware State.

Fruin scored her fourth goal of the season on an unassisted 23rd-minute tally to put Navy on the scoreboard. The Mids outshot the host Hornets by an 11-1 margin over the first 45 minutes, putting six shots on frame, but would carry that same 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.

In the second half, Navy continued to pepper the Delaware State goal with another 11 shots (nine on goal). The Mids would eventually break through inside the contest's 77th minute, as sophomore Annie Kendzior (Southlake, Texas) won a ball at the top of the box that was initially mishandled by Hornets goalkeeper Brittany Curtis and walked in uncontested for her fourth career goal.

Despite the mishap, Curtis played well on the way, making 12 saves on the afternoon, including eight in the second half.

Senior goalkeeper Beth Reed (Indianapolis, Ind.) played 81-plus minutes and teamed up with freshman Hannah Legler (Cypress, Texas), who minded the goal for the final 8:30, to give Navy its seventh shutout in 12 games this season. Neither keeper had to make a save on the afternoon.

Next week, conference play kicks off for the Mids when they host perennial conference contender Colgate on Friday, Oct. 2 at 7:00 pm in Annapolis. Navy has amassed a 9-3-1 mark in its last 13 meetings against the Raiders, who were picked to finish second in this year's Patriot League's preseason poll.
