Cary, N.C. - The Navy women's cross country team claimed the Great American Festival title behind a first-place finish from junior Jess Palacio at the Wakemed Soccer Park on Friday.
Palacio claimed the individual title with a 5k time of 17:35, which was 1:02 faster than the next collegiate runner, Ryanna Henderson of N.C. State. Palacio has won three of the four races that she has competed in this season.
As a unit, the Mids claimed the team title with a miniscule 27 points. N.C. State finished second with 43 points and UNC-Pembroke was third with 123 points.
Navy entered the race ranked No. 10 in the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region poll and earned a solid team win over N.C. State (ranked No. 4 in the Southeast Region Poll).
After Palacio, the next Mid to cross the line was sophomore Brigid Byrne, who placed fourth among collegiate runners with a time of 18:49.
Junior Mollie Hebda and freshman Zatha Loewen were neck-and-neck, finishing sixth (18:56) and seventh (18:57), respectively.
Sophomore Jacqueline Blackburn was Navy's final scorer, placing ninth with a time of 19:08.
The Mids will return to action on Oct. 16 when they host Army in a dual meet.
