ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's cross country team fell to Army, 26-29, on Saturday morning in Annapolis. Junior Jess Palacio led Navy's effort as she finished first overall with a time of 22:30 - over 55 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
"We're proud of Jess, she had a really strong run today," said Navy head coach Karen Boyle. "Everyone ran strong today, but we just came up a little short."
Palacio led the entire race and only further distanced herself from the pack as the race went on. She easily held off Army's Marcie Nordt (23:25) and Courtney Clement (23:36), who finished second and third, respectively.
Brigid Byrne (23:43) and Bethany Rahall (23:45) followed for the Midshipmen in fourth and fifth place, respectively, to give Navy three finishers in the top five.
But the Black Knights' Alexis Salmon (23:46), Cecelia Forshee (23:55) and Elizabeth O'Donnell (23:57) swept the sixth through eighth places to put Army in front.
The Mids' Zatha Loewen (24:02), Mollie Hebda (24:02) and Liz Milewski (24:04) were the next runners to cross the finish line in the ninth through 11th places, respectively.
"Army had a strong pack today," said Boyle. "We'll use this as motivation now as we train for the Patriot League Championships."
The Midshipmen will have next weekend off before heading to Easton, Pa., for the Patriot League Championships on Oct. 30.
