ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Bucknell's Caitlin Holtz cross got caught up in the wind and fell in for a goal in the second minute of the game as the Bison (5-11-0, 3-1-0) won 1-0 over Navy (9-7-1, 2-2-0) in Patriot League women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
The Bison earned a corner kick early in the game and Holtz took it and played it to Brooke Stokes. Stokes played the ball back to Holtz who sent a cross into the box. The ball then got held up in the gusty wind and then crossed the goal line for the game's only goal.
Navy's defense recovered nicely after the goal and did not allow many more scoring chances, but the Mids were unable to muster a goal to tie the game.
Navy outshot Bucknell 5-3 in the first half, but Bucknell had an advantage in shots on goal, 3-0. For the game, Navy outshot Bucknell 10-7. Bucknell led in corner kicks, 6-3.
Bucknell's Sandita McDermott earned the shutout in net for Bucknell, making five saves.
Hannah Legler made two stops in goal for Navy, including a nice save on Bucknell standout Christa Matlack in the 82nd minute.
Navy earned a corner kick in the 88th minute, but Bucknell gained control of possession and did not allow Navy to get any good opportunities in the closing seconds of the game.
The Mids will return to action with a pair of home league games next weekend, starting with Lehigh on Friday night.
