Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy swimming and diving teams remained undefeated on the young season thanks to both programs recording a victory over UMBC Friday afternoon at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis, Md. The Navy men's team posted a 158-131 win over UMBC, while the Navy women's team won its meet with the Retrievers by the score of 161-131.

The two Navy programs combined to win 25 of the 32 events contested on the afternoon.

Leading all swimmers in the meet was Mac Anthony (Jr., Allentown, Pa.), who won the 100, 200 and 400-m freestyle events. Already the school record holder in the 200-m freestyle event, his time in the event Friday of 1:50.37 is the fourth-fastest time in Navy history. His 100-m time of 51.45 gave him a narrow 13-hundredths of a second win in the race over teammate Aaron Aiken (Sr., Ocala, Fla.), while his clocking of 4:00.96 in the 400-m free gave him a nearly four-second margin of victory over teammate Erik Hunter (Sr., Placerville, Calif.).

Hunter himself would come away from the meet with a victory. He posted a time of 8:20.69 to win the 800-m freestyle race by almost eight seconds.

Joining Hunter with multiple event wins was Luke Hoffer (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.), who won both breaststroke events with times of 1:05.19 and 2:19.29, respectively. Additional Mids to win a single swimming event over UMBC were Mark Meyer (Jr., Bethesda, Md.), whose time of 2:04.56 gave him the win in the 200-m butterfly; Robbie Parker (So., Vienna, Va.), who won the 50-m free (23.31); and Ben Bondurant (So., Atlanta, Ga.), who won the 200-m individual medley with a time of 2:09.18.

Navy's Olaf Olson (Sr., Bainbridge Island, Wash.) won the three-meter diving event with a score of 367.35, while Hayden Jones (Fr., Spring, Texas) won the one-meter event with a tally of 336.38. Jones edged Olson for the win by three-quarters of a point.

The Mids (2-0) also won both relay events on the day over the Retrievers (1-1).

"I was satisfied with the swims and happy with the effort today," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts.

The Navy women's team saw a trio of its swimmers record multiple event victories. First to pick up a second win on the day was Laura Gorinski (So., Greensburg, Pa.), who won the two breaststroke events. She recorded a time of 1:11.25 to win the 100-m breaststroke by well over three seconds, then won the 200-m event with a time of 2:36.47. Her margin of victory in the latter event was nearly six seconds. Gorinski's 100-m time ranks fourth in Navy history, while her 200-m time is the No. 6 time at the school.

Allison Ranzau (Sr., Alpharetta, Ga.) was the middle of the three swimmers to tally a second win on the day. She began the afternoon by winning the 200-m free in a time of 2:05.15, then she won 400-m free in a time of 4:26.09.

Completing the hat trick of swimmers with multiple event wins was Toni Paruso (So., Savannah, Ga.), who won the 50-m free in a time of 26.78 and the 100-m fly with a posting of 1:01.84. Her time in the latter event was just off of her Navy-record clocking of 1:01.79.

The list of Mids winning a single individual event were Rheanna Vaughn (Fr., Aliso Viejo, Calif.), winner of the 800-m freestyle (9:03.46); Kellie Darmody (So., Charlotte, N.C.), who won the 100-m backstroke (1:05.10); and Olivia Kosaka (Fr., Burien, Wash.), who picked up the victory in the 200-m backstroke (2:23.91).

Just as in the men's meet, Navy swept the two women's diving events with a pair of Mids splitting the victories. Jordyn Nicholl's (So., Acworth, Ga.) score of 244.43 gave her the win on the one-meter event, while Courtney Vandament (Jr., Coppell, Texas) accrued 248.25 points to win the three-meter event.

The Navy women's team (4-0) also won the opening 200-m medley relay, while UMBC (1-1) won the closing 400-m freestyle relay.

"This was a good win against a talented UMBC team," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "We had a number of people accept the challenges we gave them, including several freshmen. That was good to see. UMBC fought us to the very end, which is a good type of meet for us to have this early in the season."

The Navy men's team will next be in competition Oct. 29 at Virginia, while the Navy women's team will next swim Nov. 6 at Bucknell.
