ANNAPOLIS, Md. - For the second consecutive week, all three Navy rowing teams will be in action this weekend. The women's team will travel to Philadelphia, Pa., for the Head of the Schuylkill on Saturday, while the men's heavyweight and lightweight teams will row at the Princeton Chase on Sunday. It will be the last competition of the fall for both men's teams.
Competing at the Head of the Charles Regatta last weekend, the women placed ninth out of 20 boats in the championship fours, turning in a time of 18:38.489. The time was sixth fastest out of all collegiate teams in the race. In the championship eights, they clocked a 17:03.934, good for 21st place.
At last year's Head of the Schuylkill, the Mids posted their best finish ever as the varsity eight and four crews each placed ninth.
The heavyweight and lightweight men's teams will be in Princeton, N.J., for the Princeton Chase on Sunday. In the championship eights at last weekend's Head of the Charles, the heavyweight eight crew placed 12th out of 35 boats in the championship eights.
At last fall's Princeton Chase, the heavyweight varsity eight took ninth out of 40 boats.
"We're looking forward to the race," said heavyweight head coach Rick Clothier. "It's a straightforward course and we'll compete with some of the best college crews in the country. This is a culmination of our rowing for the fall semester and we'll get good look at a lot of the crews we will row against in the spring."
The fours had the lightweight team's best run last weekend at the Head of the Charles as they placed eighth. The squad experienced significant success at last year's Princeton chase as the varsity four and eight crews each placed third.
"This is our last competition for the varsity crews before we are off the water for the winter," said lightweight head coach Steve Perry. "Therefore we're hoping to put a good race together and improve on our results from last weekend. "
