ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The 15th-ranked Navy water polo team jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back in cruising past George Washington, 22-9, on Saturday at Macdonough Hall's Scott Natatorium. The win, coupled with Navy's 14-10 victory over Salem International this morning, improved Navy's record to 20-5 overall.
The Navy water polo program has now won at least 19 games in all 29 years since the program was resurrected in 1982. The win over GWU also moves Navy to 6-1 in the CWPA Southern Division standings and a win this afternoon over Johns Hopkins would give Navy the CWPA Southern Division title.
The Mids led 4-0 just three minutes into the game on a pair of goals by Luke Baldwin (Sr. / La Grange Park, Ill.) and Stevie Ray (Jr. / Baytown, Texas). Navy would lead 7-2 after one quarter as Conor Handley (Jr. / Naperville, Ill.) and Scott Cotton (Carlsbad, Calif.) also added goals late in the quarter.
The Mids would slowly add to the lead in the second quarter as Ray scored twice and four other players tallied goals for Navy, which took a 13-4 lead at halftime.
Navy would lead 16-7 after three quarters, before outscoring the Colonials, 6-2, in the fourth quarter for the 22-9 victory.
Ray scored four goals to lead Navy, while Baldwin had three. Paul Pedrotty (So. / Coronado, Calif.), Jared Griffin (Fr. / Arnold, Md.) and Andrew Lacosse (Fr. / Owings, Md.) scored twice. Six other players scored once.
Navy plays Johns Hopkins this afternoon at 2:00 pm.
