ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's heavyweight and lightweight rowing teams will join the women's rowing team this Saturday when all three compete at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
Saturday will mark the second consecutive weekend of action for both men's teams while it will be the first competition of the year for the Navy women.
"It's the first race of the season for us so it will be good to see where we are," said women's head coach Mike Hughes. "This weekend will give us an idea of where we stand in our training."
The women's team will compete in the novice eight with one boat, the junior varsity eight with two boats and will have one boat in the varsity eight race. Last season, the women placed a boat in the top-three of each race, including a first-place finish in the junior varsity eight.
Coming off a first-place finish at last weekend's Poughkeepsie Regatta, the heavyweight team will compete in five events on Saturday. The heavyweights will have two boats in the collegiate four, two boats in the collegiate novice eight, three boats in the collegiate junior varsity eight, two boats in the collegiate novice four and four boats in the collegiate varsity eight.
The heavyweight team had a first-place boat in four of the six races they competed in at the Navy Day Regatta Last season.
"We always look forward to the Navy Day Regatta," said heavyweight head coach Rick Clothier. "We rowed in the very first one, and now it has grown to be a really good size regatta. We're going to take a large contingent, as it will be the first competition of the fall for everyone but our top eight that competed last weekend. We're definitely excited and pleased to be getting back out there."
Last weekend at the Occoquan Challenge, the lightweight team took four of the top-five spots in the varsity eight and swept the first four places in the varsity four. This weekend, the lightweight squad will compete in the varsity four with four boats and in the novice eight and varsity eight each with two boats.
The Navy Day Regatta began in 1986 as a way to promote and support the U.S. Navy's birthday (Oct. 13, 1775) among the Navy and Marine Corps.
