Most Recent Navy-Penn Matchup: April 26, 2025 in Annapolis
The Navy lightweight rowing team closed out its regular season with a slate of four races on Saturday morning against Penn on the Severn River. In an Eastern Sprints League matchup between two of the nation's top-eight teams, the third-ranked Quakers knocked off the eighth-ranked Mids in three of those contests and retained both the Callow Cup and 1919 Trophy.
The final race on Saturday morning was the most competitive of the quartet of contests between the Mids and Quakers. The action was tight at each of the respective 500-meter check points, and as the teams closed in on the finish line at the corner of Hospital Point, Penn had just enough of a lead to edge Navy by 2.5 seconds, 6:18.1 to 6:20.6.
What's at Stake
Callow Cup
Put into rotation beginning in 1955, the trophy has been given to the winner of the varsity race between Navy and Penn every year except 1973, 2020 and 2021. The trophy is named after Russell "Rusty" Callow, who coached at both Penn and Navy and retired in 1959 after being associated with rowing for more than 50 years. All-time, the 68-race series is tied 34-34. The Mids' last Callow Cup victory came in 2022 in Philadelphia
1919 Trophy
Originally presented at the first-ever meeting between the Mids and Quakers, the trophy now serves as the team points prize for best combined results in the annual meet. That meeting is believed to be the first known record of intercollegiate lightweight racing in the United States.
Last Time Out - April 18 versus Harvard and MIT in Annapolis
The eighth-ranked Navy lightweight rowing team was tested on Saturday morning with a top-flight series of races against the top-two ranked programs in the nation, No. 1 Harvard and No. 2 MIT. At the conclusion of a trio of contests on the Severn River, the Crimson finished 3-0, while the Mids finished runner-up in two of the three events.
In the final contest of the three-race series, the Haines Trophy was up for grabs for the top finisher of the first varsity eight race between Harvard and Navy. Already in possession of the Col. Paulovich Points Trophy for winning the first two events, the Crimson made it a clean sweep as they completed the 2,000 meters in a time of 5:51.0. Navy found itself in a tussle with MIT, though the Engineers pulled away in the second half of the race to secure second place at 5:55.8, nine-plus seconds ahead of the Mids' 6:05.2 mark.

Clothier Cup
This will be the sixth annual race of the Clothier Trophy, which is a team points trophy for the Navy/Harvard/Penn heavyweight race. It was donated by the Navy Crews of 1984.
