ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The 15th-ranked Navy water polo team breezed past Washington & Jefferson in the CWPA Southern Division Quarterfinals, 22-4, to advance to tonight's semifinal round. The Mids improved to 22-5 overall with the victory.
The win also gives Navy a spot in the CWPA Eastern Championships in two weeks in Lewisburg, Pa. The top four teams in the southern division tournament earn a spot in Easterns.
Navy wasted no time in putting away Washington & Jefferson, jumping out to an 11-0 lead after one quarter and 13-1 cushion at halftime. Kyle McGhie and Chris Vahey scored twice in the first quarter, while seven other players scored once to give Navy the large first-quarter lead. Two more players scored in the second quarter, before Navy led 16-3 after three quarters. Navy outscored the Presidents, 6-1, in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
Six different players scored two goals each, while 10 players scored once. Navy had a remarkable 16 players score goals in the lopsided victory.
Navy will now face the winner of Bucknell and Mercyhurst at 5:45 pm today at Macdonough Hall.
